Cat Health / Food / Flea Control and Other Stuff

Keeping our babies healthy is a responsibility not to be taken lightly. Making sure they eat the right foods and not to much so they don't become over weight, as unfortunately many are these days, is an important duty. With the recent Chinese food poisoning episode, it's more important than ever to make sure you know what's in your cats food.

We had a close call with Sassy during the Chinese poisoning episode. She ended up in the vet all day with an IV in her to hydrate her. She sank fast and luckily we got her in just in time. She's good as new now but I read all the labels on the cat food before I buy them now.

We also buy canned chicken and feed that to her as a treat every so often just so she is not always eating dry food. For some reason, she never really liked the wet foods. That probably saved her life since she only took a taste of the junk that was poisoned and almost killed her.

For feeding we've settled on Science Diet dry food. She loves the Ocean Fish Flavor. It was not on the recall list and it doesn't have any of the stuff in it that was. She likes it and it's better for her than a lot of the other brands.

We also feed her Science Diet hairball control. Nothing worse than seeing your baby try to hack up a hairball. The Hairball control stuff really works.

Fleas, ticks and lice can be a frightening experience. Watching your furry critter go crazy scratching is no fun. We use Frontline Plus for our Sassy cat. We used to get it from the vet but found out you can order on line from Petmeds without a prescription. Seems some Vets are not very forth coming when you ask them about this. They would rather you buy it from them so they can mark it up. We've made it convenient for you to order a 3 pack directly from PetMeds.

Sassy does have a little indulgence in the morning. She loves her Whiska treats. I give her about 7 or 8 pieces in the morning during our morning routine when she wakes me up and gives me love.

Her favorites are the Seafood Medley and Tantalizing turkey. Yummy Yummy !

A great item I stumbled upon is the Catit fresh water drinking fountain. I wasn't sure whether or not Sassy would like it but she loves it. She drinks way more than she used to. That's good because it keeps your babies hydrated and their kidneys healthy. I actually took it up to clean and run though the dishwasher and put a fresh bowl of water down for her while it was gone and the little runt got mad at me. It took me a day or two to get around to setting it back up and I noticed a marked decline in the amount of urine clumps in her Litter box. Once I set it back up her urine production went back up. She is such a brat.

Healthy CatWe take Sassy to the Vet for regular check ups and shots. We've opted to have her get the rabies vaccine that they need once a year. It is supposedly tolerated better by cats. She used to like going to the vet in the beginning, but after her FHO operation, spayed and nearly dropping dead from the Chinese food poisoning episode, she is not happy about going anymore. She worries I'm going to leave her. It breaks my heart to see the fear in her eyes when it's time to go. Good thing it's only a once a year thing.

We do most of our pet food shopping at Petsmart. They will start sending you coupons that can really add up over time. Sometimes it's kind of depressing going to the store and seeing all the poor little babies looking at you with those big cat eyes hoping your going to take them home with you. You want to take them all but it's just not possible.

We order on the Internet a lot. We've provided links for you straight into the products we recommend above. They don't sell Frontline for some reason at Petsmart, so we've made it easy for you to get it straight from PetMeds.
